Alvechurch midfielder Jed Abbey has stressed the importance of transitioning their FA Cup success into the league as they prepare to play Rushdon and Diamonds on Saturday. (KO: 12:30)

The Church went on their best run in the FA Cup since 1973 and had a memorable first round giant-killing over Cheltenham Town, before being knocked out by fellow League One opposition in Forest Green Rovers.

Due to their participation in the FA Cup and Trophy, Alvechurch subsequently find themselves in the bottom three of the Southern Premier Central division but have as many as eight games in hand on teams above them, and the 20-year-old believes they need to start winning games as quickly as possible to push up the table.

Abbey said: "We need to get higher up the table, we need to start winning games and getting points on the board with the games in hand, we're in the relegation zone at the moment so we need to take our FA Cup form into the league to get away from danger.

"We have had a good team spirit in cup competitions, we think we can beat any team, we've probably done so well in them as we've put more energy and focus into those cup games, but we must take that into league action.

"It'll be very important to end the year strongly so we can go into 2023 on good form, with high spirits and fully focus on league football which is our bread and butter."

Despite their FA Cup second-round defeat at The New Lawn Stadium, Abbey came away from the game with a personal achievement, scoring a sublime free-kick to level up the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute, and the former Wolverhampton Wanderers academy player is hoping those sorts of strikes can continue for the rest of the season.

Abbey added: "I was going to let our striker take the free kick actually, but the gaffer shouted for me to step up, and I did with a lot of confidence as I've already scored two of them this season, and luckily, it went into the top corner so I've got to thank God for it and hopefully I can score more goals like that this season to help the team."
